Hello, this is a US Postal Inspector and a member of the Mecklenburg County Consumer Fraud Task Force.

Our fraud alert this month is "Protect your Social Security number". By protecting your Social Security number, you reduce the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft. Here are some things to remember.

  1. Do not provide your personal information to individuals and firms that you are not personally familiar with, especially over the telephone.
  2. Keep documents containing your personal information in a safe location. Examples of your personal information are your date of birth, Social Security number, passwords and credit card numbers.
  3. Avoid placing your outgoing mail in your mailbox and consider taking letters that contain personal information to the post office.
  4. For additional security, request automatic deposit from your banking institution.

Remember, your Social Security Number is an important key to your credit and your Good Name. Protect it.

If you become a victim of identity theft, report it to your local police department as soon as possible and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission either via telephone, @ 1-877/438-4338 or at www.consumer.gov/idtheft.

Reporte casos de robo de identidad a su departamento de policia. Rejistre su querella con la Comision Federal de comercio al telefono 1-877-438-4338 o www.consumer.gov/idtheft.
